New signing Pablo Gavi fired Barcelona to a 2-1 win over Rayo Vallecano on Saturday, scoring the winning goal on his debut to start the club's new era with a vital victory.
Barca started the season with optimism after a summer of heavy investment but fell behind after just seven minutes in Vallecas when Rayo's Santi Comesana was left unmarked to head home.
However, Barcelona were level after 21 minutes when the 19-year-old Fati fired in from a tight angle after good work from Gavi on the left flank.
Gavi would then score what proved to be the winner in the 30th minute after being found in space by Raphinha. The 18-year-old controlled the ball well before firing low into the bottom corner from the edge of the box.
Rayo had their chances to equalize after the break but were denied by some excellent saves from Marc-Andre ter Stegen.
Barca are now top of the standings, with Real Madrid and Sevilla breathing down their necks. Both teams will be looking to make a statement when they face each other on Sunday.
