SHANGHAI, China - A powerful typhoon has made landfall in China, bringing heavy rains and winds to the coastal regions and threatening millions of people with flooding and other hazards.

Typhoon Muifa, the 12th cyclone to hit mainland China this year, made landfall on the Zhoushan Islands, southeast of Shanghai, on Wednesday.

The storm is expected to weaken as it moves inland, but it is still likely to cause significant damage and disruption.
